French-Creole "joie de vivre" is on the menu at Guadeloupe's mid-August "Fete des Cuisinieres," or Festival of Cooks. Dancing and dining at a five-hour banquet of Creole specialties highlight the annual event to which tourists are invited free. Over 100 island cooks, all women, all costumed traditionally, participate.
