1966 Press Photo Roman Catholics at Basilica to honor Virgin Guadalupe

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Thousands of Roman Catholics gather at the Basilica of Guadalupe in northern Mexico City today to honor the Virgin of Guadalupe on her feast day. She is the patroness of Mexico and the Philippines. Although the day is not an official holiday, usually more than a million persons crowd into the small church or pray on the huge plaza outside. The Church teaches that the Virgin appeared to a poor Indian farmer some 400 years ago on the hill where the Basilica now stands.

Photo is dated 1966.
