Steel Donut?--Well, not exactly. This workman is checking dimensions in a 16-foot gear blank at General Electric's marine turbine and gear manufacturing facility in Lynn, MA. After teeth ar cut (or hobbed) into this gear to tolerances more precise than n a delicate watch, it will become part of the propulsion system of a tanker. Shipowners and operators throughout the world use General Electric marine stam turbines and gears.
