1969 Press Photo Laurence Gander & Pogrund, newsmen, convicted in South Africa

Laurence Gander, left, editor-in-chief of the Rand Daily Mail and his chief reporter Benjamin Pogrund, are pictured Thursday outside the South African Supreme Court in Johannesburg. They were convicted by the court of publishing reports on prison conditions without taking "reasonable steps" to verify their veracity. Their sentences will be announced Friday. The trial was generally regarded as a barometer on the future of press freedom in South Africa.
