1970 Press Photo Suleiman Franjieh waves after he was elected President

Suleiman Franjieh waves to members of the Lebanese parliament in Beirut Monday after that governing body elected him president of the country. Franjieh, formerly the finance minister, won by a 50-49 vote on the third ballot by the 99 legislators. After the balloting, fighting broke out on the house floor and in the galleries and police were needed to restore order. At right is deputy speaker of house, Michael Sessin.
