The United States announced Wednesday its readiness to join with the Soviet Union, France and Britain both within and outside the United Nations to prevent war in the Middle East. But the Soviet Union, while not rejecting outright call for big power talks, countered with a demand that the United States and Britain withdraw their fleets from the Mediterranean.
