1959 Press Photo Vassalo Fernandez seeks political asylum in United States

Noble Antonio Vassalo Fernandez, 22, gestures at news conference where he said he is seeking political asylum in the United States. Vassalo identified himself as a member of the Dominican Republic's Wrestling team at the current Pan American Games in Chicago. He said he long had been opposed to the regime of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujille "because of the murders and oppression." The news conference was held at the New York headquarters of the Dominican Liberation Movement.
