Ann Gammell, the wire of the only doctor in Kenmare, prepares to band a Yellow-Headed backbird during a trip to the marshlands just south of the Canadian border. Affectionately dubbed the "Bird Lady," Mrs. Gammell has banded nearly 160,000 birds for the Department of Interior since 1957. She's unpaid and says her hobby may have "gotten out of hand." She adds, "You do it because you love your work or because you've lost your mind."

Photo is dated 1971.

Photo measures 6.25 x 10.25 inches.
