1960 Press Photo Extortion plot principals: (R) state's witness & (L) defendants

Helen Ela, 24, of Washington is led into court by Cpl. William Crist today and Mary Jane Spencer, 21, is accompanied by her finance, Donald Anderson, 32. Miss Spencer and Anderson were held for the grand jury on charges of trying to extort, $2,000 from American League umpires Bill McKinley and Ed Runge. Miss Ela was held as a state's witness. A picture of the two umps and two women in a motel room was used in the blackmail try.
