Eden's Conservative Party won a smashing victory in the elections. The popular former foreign minister, who labored so long in the shadow of Winston Churchill, emerged from the elections with the greatest popular mandate given any reigning prime minister in nearly a century, with a House of Commons majority of at least 59 seats.
