Monumental tombs of unimaginable antiquity, concrete and glass hotels, donkeys and goats in central city. Kentucky Fried Chicken, mosques with tall minarets, bumper to bumper traffic, turbaned Moslems in long robes, blue jeans and T-shirts-contrasts seem to leap out at the visitor to Cairo. Even the countryside alongside the majestic Nile River south of the city is a study of contrasts. One one side of the road or railroad is completely barren desert. On the other, along a narrow strip bordering the river, is a belt of green-date palm trees, sugar cane fields, tiny tree-shaded villages of adobe-like mud-brick dwellings.
