1962 Press Photo Astronaut Walter M. Schirra Using Telephone Aboard Kearsarge

A happy astronaut, Commander Walter M. Schirra, takes one of three telephone calls a few minutes after he emerged from his Sigma 7 spacecraft on the deck of the carrier Kearsarge in Mid-Pacific yesterday. Schirra was congratulated by President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson for his six-orbit flight and then he talked to his wife in Houston, Texas.
