Brian Friel was born in Northern Ireland and has lived there all his life; to further recommend him he has written four plays, the latest of which is "Philadelphia, Here I Come!", while his stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Commonweal, the Critic, The Bell, Kilkenny Magazine, and The Atlantic Monthly, among others. The Gold In The Sea (Doubleday, $4.50) is a collection of 13 short stories about the young and the old, the gay and the sad, the hopeful and the disillusioned, his avowed message only that people are still as varied, as fascinating, as individual as an Irishman.
