C. E. Knowder, left, and E. G. Wellein, U.S. Department of Interior scientists, remove internal matter from egg. In Denver, Colorado, two Department of Interior Biologists climbed into a small government-owned aircraft and headed the plane to New Orleans. Their mission: to extract the contents of two whooping crane eggs laid at New Orleans Audubon Park. The eggs had been produced by the park's famed whooping crane mother, Josephine.

Photo is dated 1963.
