1956 Press Photo Mayor Confers "Order of Merit" on Alberto Sepulveda Contreras

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
"Order of Merit" is conferred on Alberto Sepulveda Contreras, second from left, Chilean ambassador to the Organization of American States, by Mayor Morrison, right. At left is W. J. Amoss, director of the Port of New Orleans and general chairman of the Pan-American Day observance. Second from right is Alfonso Somavia, Chilean consul in New Orleans. The Latin American considers New Orleans, perhaps more than any other city in the U.S., his "home away from home," the Chilean ambassador to the Organization of American States said here Saturday. Contreras delivering the main address at the annual Pan-American day luncheon at The Roosevelt, said, "Indeed, in your great International Trade Mart, where he displays his goods, and at International House, his club for cementing friendly relations, he finds himself in familiar surroundings, thousands of miles away from home as he may be."

Photo is dated 1956.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
