Reggie Smith scratched his forehead beneath his broad-brimmed straw hat and then slashed the foot-long knife into the coconut. "They're not from here, you know. Coconuts were brought here from Asia centuries ago with the first settlers. So were the beadfruit and banana trees." He passed the fresh coconut around to the tour members. "Here" is the island of Moorea, 10 miles off the coast of the legendary island of Tahiti, where Gauguin went gaga.
