Description
"How're you getting along," Dr. J.H. McNinch, VA chief medical director, asks as he chats with paraplegic Joseph A. Shockley of Anniston, Alabama, delegate to the DAV convention here. Shockley has been in a wheelchair since he was injured by machine-gun fire in World War II. Thousands of paraplegics living today have penicillin to thank for their continued existence, the Veterans Administration's chief medical director said here today. "Before World War II and the discovery of penicillin, most paraplegics died of infection," said Dr. J.H. McNich in an interview before he addressed the Disabled American Veterans' convention at the Jung Hotel.

Photo is dated 1965.
