One of the problems of research into relief of pain is difficulty of measuring a person's sensitivity to pain. Dr. B. Berthed Wolff, a researcher at New York University, has proposed a novel pain thermometer based on injections of harmless salt into the buttocks. The test is used to predict how well a patient can tolerate painful treatment. Here, Dr. Wolff demonstrates another method of measuring pain tolerance with electrical shock.
