Down through the rotary table goes the 28-inc bit to start cutting the first section of a proposed 26,000-foot oil test in in Plaquemines parish. This will be the deepest hole ever drilled in the world, when it is completed. Looking on form the derrick floor as the bit is lowered are F.B. Chesser (left), drilling superintendent for US Oil Company of Louisiana, and G.G. Jordan, tool pusher for the big Rig 25 that will cut the hole. The spudding-in was accomplished ____day afternoon.

Photo is dated 1960.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
