Eighteen-year-old Dennis Gruwell appears to be the epitome of the well-rounded teenager. He is captain of the basketball team, scholar, church member, and popular class leader. But there is more to Dennis than his list of excellent credentials. At Benjamin Franklin, where the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Gruwell is a senior, his favorite extracurricular activities are sports, specially basketball and track. Dennis participates in sports not only for the usual reasons, but for others too. He explained, "I guess it's an old cliche, but I really believe that America is only as strong as her citizens.
