Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
A flat sheet of flame hovers a fraction of an inch above the surface of a device that may make possible a virtually pollution-free engine. This version of the device, called a "transpiration burner," was developed by the General Electric Research and Development Center, Schenectady, New York as a tool for use in research on combustion problems. Dr. George E. Moore (left), developer of this version of the transpiration burner, is shown checking the flame temperature with mechanical engineer Bruce Gans. The burner reduces pollutants by lowering the temperature of the flame. It could be used either with a steam engine or a gas turbine engine.

Photo is dated 1974.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
