1964 Press Photo U.S. Representative Gillis Long and Eberhard Deutsch, Fort Polk

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
America's newest "buck privates" are being groomed by "persuasion and motivation" at the fabulous rate of 1,000 per week at this vast Army training center lodged in the piney rolling hill country 260 miles northwest of New Orleans. They don't even refer to the new private as "draftees" anymore - they're "trainees" in today's modern Army. Representative Gillis Long, and Eberhard P. Deutsch, civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army for Louisiana, speak with a basic combat trainee during a tour of the Fort Polk center.

Photo is dated 1964.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
