1976 Press Photo Firemen Pump Water into the Slidell High School gymnasium

Firemen Pump Water into the three-story wood-and-brick Slidell High School gymnasium which was reduced to rubble just after midnight Tuesday. Slidell Assistant Fire Chief Ed Poppler said there was no hope of saving the gym when firemen arrived so they placed a "water curtain" between the building and the school and were successful in preventing the fire from spreading beyond the athletic facilities.
