South Africa's prime minister, Hendrik Verwoerd, who sees red at every move of black Africans toward independence. He survived an assassination attempt by a disgruntled, deranged white farmer just a year ago. In March he took South Africa out of the British Commonwealth. But his continued policy of racial segregation still meets opposition from the Africans and worries many South African whites.
