Description
Mrs. George Pigman Jr. (left), and Mrs. J. Barnwell Phelps hold UNICEF poster. UNICEF, the United NationE™s Children Fund, was one of the first organizations to reach out a hand to feed the starving women and children in Biafra and Nigeria. By midsummer, when the world awoke to the appalling conditions in Nigeria, UNICEF had already been working for several months to bring emergency relief to the child victims of this African civil war. Mrs. J. Barnwell Phelps, chairman of the New Orleans Committee for UNICEF, says UNICEF was able to airlift a lifeline of food and medicine into the famine-threatened areas as early as last April.
