Pipeline Production on Harvey Canal, New Orleans. Pipelines play an important role in Louisiana's oil industry -- if they stay in their place. This isn't much of a problem on land because once down, pipelines stay. But it is a problem at river crossings, through swamps and bays and in the Gulf of Mexico, where pipelines are laid underwater. There they have a natural tendency to pop to the top. This is especially true of natural gas lines, in which the product carried adds little to the weight of the pipe. Petroleum pipelines themselves face the same rising problems when they are emptied for any reason. Joint of pipe picks up both concrete and reinforcing mesh passing through this unit.
