1968 Press Photo Police recruits on the department's firing range- Chef Menteur

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Police recruits on the department's firing range, located off Chef Menteur Highway. Their goal is to give the police a break. In doing so, they might save you from a break-in- such is the Police Scholarship Foundation, which was launched by public-spirited citizens in 1963. The foundation seeks to give police officers in New Orleans and in Jefferson parish the opportunity to better themselves and to win the respect of the community through education. Apparently, the Police Scholarship Foundation is achieving this goal. Last June, four years after its inception, four trained criminologists graduated from Loyola University- these were men who attended school during their off-duty hours. This June, some 35 New Orleans police officers- as well as two Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies- will graduate as criminologist from Loyola. Next year, some 45 are expected to earn their degrees. And each and every year thereafter, the foundation foresees between 30 and 35 area policemen graduating from Loyola with degrees in criminology.
