What evergreen makes a good hedge or screen, thrives in a wide variety of soils, is fairly free on insects and disease and tolerates cold very well in the New Orleans area. This evergreen is classed more as a tree rather than a shrub as it will grow to 30 feet tall as it gets very old, unless you prune it back. It has a columnar type growth habit and narrow, dark green glossy leaves in a dense spiral formation. And it is easy to propagate from seeds or cuttings. In fact, volunteer plants often spring up from seeds which drop to the ground from the mature plant. Guessed it? It is "Japanese Yew," the popular name for Podocarpus.

Photo is dated 1969.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
