1956 Press Photo Tugboat Towing Huge Derrick Barge in Gulf of Mexico - noc00703

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The tug in foreground, the R. Thomas McDermott, operated by J. Ray McDermott and Company, Inc., is shown towing a huge derrick barge with man-wide nylon hawser. The 500-mile trip across the Gulf of Mexico from Harvey to Corpus Christi, Texas, is made with the use of short scope nylon line, able to absorb shock without parting. The light nylon line has about twice the strength of comparable size conventional fiber rope.

Photo is dated 1956.

Photo measures 10 x 8 inches.
