Description
It's a calm day by the standards of the North Sea as two boats owned by the Gulf Mississippi Marine Corporation, based in New Orleans, plow through the waves. On rough days, waves can tower to the 90-foot mark and winds have been clocked at 135 knots. - Edinburgh, Scotland: October is wintertime in the North Sea. You have only to ask the more than 200 Louisianians working in the off-shore oil fields here. They'll be glad to tell you about the North Sea and how it can make the Gulf of Mexico seem a mill pond. They'll tell you that the North Sea is never calm. But, it is in October, after a summertime hiatus, that the wind-tossed currents again begin to produce towering waves that can peak at the 90-foot mark, although no one has ever precisely measured one that high.
