Red-flowering Ixora Bears small star-shaped flowers in clusters. New Orleanians are continuing their return to return to tropical flowers as memories of our severe winters grow more dim. Ixora (pronounced ik-SOH-rah) is a tropical evergreen shrub returning to the local scene. This grows about 24-30 inches high in this area when planted outdoors. It grows six to eight feet in South Florida where it is more common. It is valued for its dense habit of growth, its glossy dark green leaves, reddish twigs and profusion of flowers borne in late spring, summer and fall. The small star-shaped flowers on slender tubes, are borne in terminal clusters. The flowers are in such hues as scarlet white, buff, pink and gold, depending on species and varieties.

Photo is dated 1968.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
