1980 Press Photo Helen Wallbank Milliken, co-chairman of ERA-merica - nob85328

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Helen Milliken is an unlikely sympathizer with the "fence sitters," those professing belief in the Equal Rights Amendment but unwilling to work for its passage. Indeed, as co-chairman of ERA-merica, Helen Milliken's job is to promote the ERA, not coddle the uncommitted. Nonetheless, few leaders of the women's movement appear as understanding of the reservations expressed by the vast legion of American women wary of whole-heartedly supporting "the cause" Helen Wallbank Milliken, wife of Governor Willaim Milliken of Michigan, frequently addresses the fears of those women, fears founded on and refueled by the dissemination of what she calls "an ocean of misinformation" about the ERA. "All the 'anti' factions have jumped in with so many distortions," says she, "that it has become virtually impossible for most people to separate fact from fiction."

Photo is dated 1980.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
