1978 Press Photo Creation of the facilities of Port Hudson Commemorative Area

Description
Battlepark under development - The battle of Port Hudson was even longer in duration than the famed siege of Vicksburg, and Lincoln called it "one of the bloodiest conflicts of the War Between the States." Creation of the facilities of the new Port Hudson State Commemorative Area, to be operated by the Office of State Parks, will begin this Fall, but significant contributions to the development of the site have already been made by the Louisiana National Guard. Guardsmen and National Guard equipment, under the direction of General O.J. Daigle, have worked for the past eight weeks clearing ground, preparing roadbeds and creating drainage structures. The battlepark is located off United States 61 between Baton Rouge and St. Francisville, upriver from the Port Hudson National Cemetery.

Photo is dated 1978.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
