Part of Sabang's fascination lies in his unusual appearance, which is highlighted by the prominent fibrous protuberances of his cheeks, and the throat pouch that dangles to his waist. These are peculiarities to the adult male orangutan. Sabang, who hails from Sumatra, is like most other large male apes in that he looks more ferocious than he really is. After going through a typical routine of teeth-baring, chest-thumping and snarling, if he still hasn't scared off his antagonist, he'll simply spit in frustration and lumber off himself.
