Shirley Veal describes herself with a good-natured laugh as "a shoutin' Baptist just like our president." the Donaldsonville native's earliest memories are of red beans and rice and homemade gumbos prepared by her mother. But each weekday morning finds Shirley up to her elbows in Challah dough, or poised over a pan of crisply frying latkes. As the cook for Lakeshore Hebrew Day School, much of her cooking these days is strictly kosher.
