1975 Press Photo Construction at Intestate 55 between Frener near LaPlace

A crane points skyward as work continues on a swampy segment of Interstate 55 between Frenier, near LaPlace, and Manchac, which is nestled on the strip of land separating Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas. The Louisiana Department of Highways estimates it will be another 18 months to two years before this $50 million stretch of roadway is completed. Work has yet to begin on the portion of I-55 which will link Manchac with Ponchatoula to the north.
