The Grand Encampment of the Knights Templar held a grand parade on Canal Street April 25, 1922, during the organization's 35th triennial conclave in New Orleans, recalled A. L. Brandt, who was a youngster in eighth grade at the time. "The parade marched on both sides of Canal Street and proceeded up St. Charles Street to a church on St. Charles Avenue. My uncle, George Keff, rode a horse at the beginning of the parade," she recalled. "The men wore their uniforms with hats decorated with beautiful white plumes." The parade included 50 bands and 12 drum and bugle corps. A magnificent arch with a knight on a white horse was erected on Canal Street to welcome the Templars.
