1965 Press Photo Boys playing "chicken" on highways to prove their manliness

Delinquents think they are proving manliness by playing "chicken" on highways. Sometimes it's months before a probation worker in the field unit of the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court can see a delinquent youngster who has been assigned to him. Edward Ledford, who usually has assigned to him 200 to 250 boys on probation, tries to diagnose each individual and decide how much help is needed. If the case doesn't seem urgent, Ledford may place the boy on inactive probation and will not see him unless the boy seeks an interview.
