An ocean-going liner (of Isthmian Lines) is shown here in the lock at the entrance to the Industrial Canal, New Orleans. This five-and-one-half mile artificial waterway connects the Mississippi River with Lake Ponchartrain at New Orleans. It was built for the Board of Port Commissioners by the Goethals Company, builders of the Panacea Canal. It supplements the 12 miles of wharves on the Mississippi at New Orleans, providing room for more wharves and for industrial plants t o locate factories with water outlets. It is e bout three mile s from downtown New Orleans.

Photo is dated 1952.

Photo measures 9.75 x 8.25 inches.
