Health - How to die of a heart attack. Man smokes more cigarettes, drinks more, eats more animal fats, is more obese, subject to more tensions, and exercises less than at any time in human history. A 20-year study of 5,127 men and women shows that such a life style favors the build-up of fatty material in such vital blood vessels as coronary arteries (upper left). Artificial hearts, cardiac transplants, pacemakers, defibrillators and other gadgets, no matter how ingenious, simply cannot do the job. The reason is that coronary attacks usually occur suddenly and unexpectedly. Hence the victims are out of reach of such medical innovations, and the overt manifestation of the illness is unheralded by long-standing symptoms or physical findings.
