James H. Douglas, Secretary of the Air Force since 1957, has been named by President Eisenhower to be Deputy Secretary of Defense. Dudley C. Sharp was promoted from undersecretary to Secretary of the Air Force. The changes resulted from the elevation of Thomas S. Gates, Jr., from deputy secretary to secretary of defense. The appointments are subject to Senate action when Congress returns next month.
