1923 Press Photo Olive Doherty Rescued by John Powell from Underground Whirlpool

Boston - Three-year-old Olive Doherty of Malden, a Boston suburb, was rescued from an underground whirlpool when she was rescued by John Powell who plunged into the seething whirlpool and carried her to safety. The underground stream swept beneath three buildings and a public highway, and the girl was carried along by the current to the pond in which the stream emptied.
