The new spectroscopic laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, first of its kind ever built, which represents the heaviest artillery yet concentrated by science for assaulting the citadel of the atom to force it to reveal the mysteries of the material world, was officially opened at Cambridge, Massachusetts before scientists from all parts of the country attending the joint annual meeting of the American Physical Society, and the Optical Society of America. Shown, left to right are Henry A. Barton, Director of Physics at the American Institute in New York; Dr. Karl T. Compton, President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and William Buffam, General Manager of the Chemical Foundation of New York City.
