Call system of trading was used by NYSE from its earliest days until replaced by a modern continuous auction market in 1871 Here in a rented hall over the Merchnats' Exchange the NYSE occupied from 1842 to 1854 some 75 brokers took their seats daily for a calling of the list of stocks for bids and offers. Today's continuous 5 1/2 hour trading session leaves a broker little time for sitting bu the term seat an outgroth of those early days still designates membership on the Exchange The Stock Exchange celebrates its 175th anniversary this year
