ORIGINALLY HOPING TO SET A NEW CONSTRUCTION RECORD BY BUILDING A 700 FOOT UTILITY PIER FOR THE BETHLEHEM STEEL COMPANY'S STATEN ISLAND YARD IN 4 DAYS WORKERS CHANGE THEIR SIGN TO "43 DAYS" AFTER COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT IN THAT LENGTH OF TIME, 25 DAYS SHORTER THAN THE PREVIOUS RECORD FOR SUCH A JOB. OFFICIALS OF LABOR UNIONS, CONTRACTORS, SHIPYARD AND NAVY JOINED IN SINKING A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE IN THE LAST YARD OF THE PIER'S CONCRETE DECK IN HONOR OF THE EVENT.
