DISCOVERY OF THE FIRST SYNTHETIC SUBSTANCE POSSESSING PIEZO-ELECTRICAL QUALITIES INVOLVING USE OF A SPECIALLY TREATED CERAMIC MATERIAL FOR CONVERTING MECHANICAL ENERGY INTO ELECTRICAL IMPULSES WAS ANNOUNCED APRIL 30 BY A HEARING AID COMPANY. THE FIRST APPLICATION OF THE REVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN MADE IN A NEW CERAMIC "PICKUP" FOR PHONOGRAPHS. TWO MINUTE STRIPS OF THE SPECIAL CERAMIC WHICH IS HIGHLY RESISTANT TO HEAT AND MOISTURE ARE USED IN THE PICKUP, WHOCH WEIGHS ONLY TWO THIRDS OF AN OUNCE IN ITS PROTECTIVE CARTRIDGE IS IMMERSED IN A GLASS OF BOILING WATER. THE NEW DEVELOPMENT MAY BE USED IN OTHER TRANSCRIPTION AND CONVERSION SYSTEMS INCLUDING MICROPHONES, TELEPHONE RECEIVERS AND LOUDSPEAKERS.
