NINETY FIVE PERCENT COMPLETED THE 9,117 FOOT BROOKLYN BATTERY TUNNEL IS EXPECTED TO OPEN LATE NEXT SPRING WHEN THE FIRST OF AN ESTIMATED 16,000,000 VEHICLES ANNUALLY WILL BEGIN ROLLING THROUGH AT LEFT ABOVE IS THE HUGE INSTRUMENT BOARD AT THE BROOKLYN END OF THE TUNNEL. INSTRUMENTS HERE INDICATE CONDITION OF THE AIR IN EVERY PART OF THE $80,000,000 TUNNEL. LOCATION OF STALLED VEHICLES CAN ALSO BE FLASHED TO THE BOARD BY TUNNEL GUARDS. AT RIGHT WORKMEN NEARING THE END OF THE WORLD'S LONGEST TILE JOB. TILING OF CEILINGS HAS BEEN COMPLETE AND THE WALLS ARE NOW GETTING THEIR SHINY ARMOR. MORE THAN 780,000 SQUARE FEET OF TILE - ENOUGH FOR 6,500 AVERAGE BATHROOMS WILL BE USED ON THE COMPLETED JOB. CLAY TILE IS USED BECAUSE OF EASE IN CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE SAVING.
