New York, N.Y.--Mrs. James C. Ayer, widow of a wealthy physician, arriving at the Federal Building, June 14, where she was held in $1,000 bail on a smuggling charge when arraigned before Federal Judge Samuel Mandelbaum. Mrs. Ayer, whose swanky apartment was raided by Federal Agents several weeks ago, previously had sent word that she was too ill to appear. A court appointed physician reported that the appearance would not endanger her health. Mrs Ayer is accused of smuggling in merchandise from Europe, including jewelry and clothing.
