Somewhere in New Guinea After living for days on Iron rations while in action, a soldier gets a longing for food that does not come out of a can. Green vegetables particularly become something that troops in a combat area dream about when meal time rolls around. In many parts of the world and in this case, bivouac areas in New Guinea the ingenious and resourceful US troops are growing their own vegetables, as well as other tasty legumes that go to make up a meal like mother would make. Here 90 acres are cultivated. Mess Sgt George Melvin samples some fresh radishes from the garden.other vegetabes produced are corn, beets, squash, beans, spinach and onions.
