Piercing the "bamboo curtain," U.S. General Lyman L. Lemintzer views the communist Chinese mainland through high-powered binoculars during a visit to the nationalist-held offshore island of Kinmen. Leminitzer, Commander in Chief of the United Nations and Far East Commands, likened the 24-hour vigilance of the island's garrison to the preparedness of troops under his command in Korea.
